Child, Adolescent, and Adult Counseling
Rachel Mertens, MA, LPCC

Clinical Therapist

Hello, and welcome!
I’m Rachel, a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) with a deep passion for supporting children, adolescents, adults, and couples as they navigate challenges such as mood disorders, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and more. My approach is rooted in empathy, authenticity, and creating a safe, nonjudgmental space where healing and growth can thrive.

My Journey to Counseling
I initially dreamed of becoming a teacher, but my path shifted, leading me to graduate from Ohio Dominican University in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in social work and a minor in Sociology. Shortly after, my husband and I relocated to Toledo, where I worked with adults experiencing both developmental disorders and mental health diagnoses. During this time, I pursued and earned my master's degree in clinical Mental Health Counseling from Bowling Green State University in December 2018.

The experience I gained in Toledo was transformative, equipping me with invaluable tools and insights. I later joined The Buckeye Ranch residential program in Grove City, Ohio, as a group therapist working with teenagers. After having my first son in 2019, I transitioned to a role as a house clinician, where I developed a special connection with some of the most challenging teens, particularly young boys. This inspired me to focus on helping teens manage their emotions and feel safe expressing themselves.

Expanding My Expertise
In 2022, after welcoming twins and navigating my own journey through postpartum anxiety and depression, I became deeply committed to maternal mental health. I’ve since completed training in Perinatal Mental Health to support mothers—whether they are new to parenting or seasoned veterans—in achieving wellness.

In addition to maternal mental health, I have training in Internal Family Systems (IFS), Trauma-Informed Skills, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). For couples, I often incorporate the Gottman Method alongside other skill-building techniques to foster connection and understanding.

My Approach
I work with clients of all ages, from children as young as six to adults in their 60s. My goal is to meet you where you are, providing a space that is entirely your own—whether it’s your first time in counseling or you’ve been on this journey before. I believe in the power of laughter, vulnerability, and shared humanity. Together, we’ll create a space where you can feel heard, validated, and empowered.

For couples, I focus on helping partners navigate challenges, rebuild trust, and strengthen their bond. I’m passionate about fostering meaningful connections and encouraging open communication.

A Bit About Me
Outside of counseling, I enjoy photography, outdoor activities, art, and writing, and I often weave these creative outlets into my work with clients. My office is filled with quotes that inspire me, alongside photos of my husband, three children, and friends—reminders of the people and moments that bring me joy.

When you’re in my office, I want you to feel like you’re talking to a fellow human being. We’ll laugh, cry, and work through challenges together, embarking on a meaningful journey of healing and self-discovery.

Looking Ahead
It takes immense courage to be vulnerable, and I am honored each time someone allows me to be part of their story. I look forward to meeting you and supporting you in achieving self-acceptance, healing, and growth. Let’s work together to help you feel better, stronger, and more empowered than when you first walked in.
